What Is the CRCST Exam?
The Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) exam is administered by HSPA (formerly IAHCSMM) and is the most recognized certification in the sterile processing field. Passing the CRCST exam demonstrates your competency in decontamination, sterilization, and instrument processing.
CRCST Exam Format
The CRCST exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions (125 scored + 25 unscored pilot questions). You have 3 hours to complete it. A passing score is 72% or higher.
The 7 CRCST Exam Domains
Understanding the exam domains and their weights is the first step to studying smart:
- Departmental Considerations — 15%
- Cleaning, Decontamination & Disinfection — 21%
- Preparation & Packaging — 21%
- Sterilization Process — 21%
- Sterile Storage, Transport & Inventory Management — 9%
- Patient Care Equipment & Distribution — 5%
- Professional Development & Human Relation Skills — 8%
Domains 2, 3, and 4 account for 63% of the exam — focus the majority of your study time here.
Top Study Strategies for the CRCST Exam
1. Practice Questions Every Day
The best way to prepare is consistent daily practice. Aim for at least 30–50 questions per day. Focus on understanding why each answer is correct, not just memorizing answers.
2. Study by Domain
Don't study randomly. Go domain by domain, master one before moving to the next. Start with the highest-weighted domains first.
3. Know Your Sterilization Parameters
The exam heavily tests sterilization parameters — temperature, pressure, time, and exposure for steam, ETO, hydrogen peroxide plasma, and dry heat sterilization.
4. Understand Spaulding Classification
Know the Spaulding Classification System (Critical, Semi-Critical, Non-Critical) inside and out. It appears in multiple questions across different domains.
5. Use Flashcards for Terminology
Sterile processing has a lot of terminology. Use flashcards for terms like bioburden, biofilm, reprocessing, sterility assurance level (SAL), and biological indicators.
Common CRCST Exam Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping decontamination topics — this is the highest weighted domain along with prep/pack and sterilization
- Memorizing without understanding — the exam tests application, not just recall
- Not reviewing rationales — always read why an answer is correct or incorrect
- Cramming the night before — spread your study over 4–8 weeks
How Long Should You Study?
Most candidates who pass on their first try study for 4 to 8 weeks, spending 1–2 hours per day. If you have less experience in sterile processing, plan for 8–12 weeks.
Final Tips
- Take at least 2 full-length mock exams before your test date
- Review your weakest domains in the final week
- Get a good night's sleep before exam day
- Read each question carefully — watch for words like "NOT," "EXCEPT," and "ALWAYS"
