You Have Your CRCST. What Comes Next?
Earning CRCST is an achievement. Your next step is to decide what kind of work you want to grow into: advanced instrument work, endoscope reprocessing, training, or department leadership.
Build a plan around a role, the experience it requires and your employer's advancement process. Another certification can support that plan, but it does not automatically change your job title or pay. This roadmap offers practical planning suggestions for technicians who already hold CRCST.
Start With the Position You Want
Before buying another study book, find out what your department needs. Ask for the job description for the next position and compare it with your current responsibilities.
| Career direction | A useful development goal | A question for your manager |
|---|---|---|
| Advanced instrument work | Broaden documented instrument knowledge and competencies | Which specialty sets or support responsibilities should I learn? |
| Endoscope reprocessing | Obtain supervised experience across the endoscope workflow | Can I cross-train in the appropriate department? |
| Training and education | Develop teaching skills through an approved assignment | What qualifies someone to become a preceptor here? |
| Lead or supervisory work | Learn coordination, communication and quality-improvement responsibilities | What separates the next role from my current position? |
Treat these as possible directions, not guaranteed promotion steps. Your facility may use different titles or require additional education and experience.
Choose a Certification That Fits Your Work
CIS: Build on Instrument Experience
HSPA requires a current, full CRCST for CIS. It also requires 200 hours of qualifying hands-on experience, separate from CRCST hours, completed within the previous five years and documented at application. Review the required experience areas before arranging training. Official HSPA CIS requirements
A practical first conversation is about access: who can supervise the work, which assignments provide the required experience and who can verify it? Once the pathway is clear, use the CIS practice page to supplement official study materials.
CER: Develop Endoscope Reprocessing Skills
CER is a standalone certification; CRCST is not a prerequisite. HSPA requires at least three months of regular hands-on endoscope reprocessing experience, completed within the previous three years and before application, plus its examination. Check the full scope and verification requirements directly with HSPA. Official CER requirements
If your current assignment does not provide that experience, ask about supervised cross-training. Reading a guide cannot replace workplace training or competency assessment. Our endoscope reprocessing workflow guide and CER practice page can support your study.
CHL: Prepare for Leadership Responsibilities
For its updated eligibility beginning October 2026, HSPA requires current CRCST plus a qualifying pathway: 12 months of full-time sterile processing experience or equivalent, 12 months of qualifying leadership experience or equivalent, or an associate degree or higher. The experience equivalents are at least 2,080 hours. Supporting documentation is required. HSPA CHL eligibility update
Eligibility to take an exam is different from eligibility for your employer's supervisor position. Ask about both. For the exam transition and testing timeline, read our CHL 2026 update; for study, explore CHL practice.
Bring Management a Development Proposal
Make your request specific enough to discuss. Prepare a one-page proposal with:
- Target role: the position or responsibilities you want to work toward.
- Current strengths: competencies and assignments you can document.
- Gaps: required experience, training, education or certification.
- Requested support: supervised cross-training, materials, exam reimbursement or scheduled learning time.
- Review date: a point when you and your manager will assess progress.
Ask about reimbursement rules before spending money, including approval deadlines and any repayment conditions. Keep the request realistic for department staffing and training capacity.
Here is a sample opening:
“I want to grow into [role] and develop the skills our department needs. Could we review the requirements and agree on a training plan? I would like to work toward [credential or competency] and understand what support is available.”
Connect Career Growth to a Compensation Review
Do not assume passing another exam automatically produces a raise. Ask whether your employer offers certification differentials, a clinical ladder, reclassification or promotion opportunities—and what evidence each requires.
You can say:
“If I complete this training and meet the expectations for [role], what is the process for reviewing my job level and compensation? Who needs to approve it, and when should we revisit it?”
Record the agreed next steps. If there is no immediate opening, ask what would make you a stronger candidate and whether a future review can be scheduled. A clear answer helps you decide where to invest your time.
Use a 90-Day Plan to Get Started
This is an example planning schedule, not a certification-completion promise.
| Period | Suggested action | Result to bring to your next discussion |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–30 | Review role requirements and meet with your manager | A target role, identified gaps and proposed training |
| Days 31–60 | Begin approved supervised assignments and focused study | Documented learning and feedback |
| Days 61–90 | Review progress, remaining requirements and support | An updated plan and a date for the next review |
Keep a professional record of completed competencies, approved training and contributions. Use only information you are permitted to retain; leave patient identifiers and confidential facility records out of a personal portfolio.
Keep Your Current Credentials Active
HSPA credentials require annual renewal, continuing education and a renewal fee. Additional credentials carry additional CE requirements. Include renewal dates and ongoing learning in your plan so pursuing the next credential does not cause you to overlook the one you already earned. HSPA renewal guidance
Your first action: request a career-development meeting and bring one target role, one skill gap and one specific request for support. Use the outcome to choose your next training or certification step.
